Mars needs you! NASA’s newest recruitment posters

With NASA developing capabilities to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, the space agency released a batch of recruitment posters enticing human pioneers to our planetary neighbour.

There are many roles on offer from explorers and surveyors to farmers and teachers. The posters are designed to give us all an idea of what life on Mars might hold for a spacesuit-clad astronaut.

As with NASA’s last set of wall-worthy posters, that gave us a glimpse of what a holiday in space might look like, the new eight-poster series entitled “Mars Explorers Wanted” retain a hint of the retro style and add a little propaganda feel.

Originally commissioned for a 2009 exhibition at the Kennedy Space Centre, the poster series was recently released online.

For those inspired by the posters, it’s a 78.8-million-kilometre return trip – seven months one way – to the Red Planet. But you might just be able to answer the question: is there life on Mars?

The posters are now freely available to download.

Hike the solar system’s largest canyon, Valles Marineris on Mars, where you can catch blue sunsets in the twilight, and see the two moons of Mars (Phobos and Deimos) in the night sky.

Night owls welcome! If you lived on Mars’ moon Phobos, you’d have an office with a view, mining for resources with Mars in the night sky. Settlers below on Mars would see Phobos rise and set not once, but twice in one day!

Got a green thumb? This one’s for you! In space, you can grow tomatoes, lettuce, peas, and radishes just like you would find in your summer garden. New ways of growing fresh food will be needed to keep brave explorers alive.

Have you ever asked: what is out there? So have we! That curiosity leads us to explore new places like Mars and its moons, Phobos and Deimos. Just what lies beyond the next valley, canyon, crater, or hill is something we want to discover with rovers and with humans one day too.
