The Gulf Stream is a warm ocean current that flows from the Gulf of Mexico north along America’s east coast before heading across the Atlantic where it takes the chill off the climates of western and northern Europe.
As this visualisation from NASA shows, it throws off a complex web of eddies and countercurrents along the way.
