Atlas V rocket separates from Centaur upper stage

The first stage booster drops off as NASA's OSIRIS-REx heads towards its target asteroid Bennu.

A camera on the Centaur upper stage captured the moment of first stage separation as NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx spacecraft left Earth.

The first US mission to sample an asteroid, OSIRIS-REx is designed to retrieve at least 60 grams of surface material and return it to Earth for study.
