Where does floodwater go? Investigating groundwater

A recent study in Scientific Reports has shown that up to 20% of floodwater on the east coast can be absorbed by aquifers, eventually getting into a ‘groundwater superhighway’ that stretches from Queensland to Sydney Harbour. What does this mean for the future of flooding and water security?

In this Cosmos Briefing, we speak to lead author Dr Ben Mather, a computational geophysicist in the University of Sydney’s Earthbyte Group, about groundwater modelling, the end-point of floods, and water security.
