As part of the Ultramarine project we are diving into our archives and republishing some paid content for free.

In the December 2022 Cosmos print magazine, David Hancock wrote about the scientists and Indigenous rangers collaborating to gather knowledge about the large marine animals in Australia’s north, which are thought to be in decline.

We recorded an audio version of the story which you can listen to below or via Apple or Spotify. You can also read the original article for free.

We publish most of our work for free so we can share the latest science news to everyone. We also publish longer read stories that are only available to our subscribers.

Subscriber fees help support this work and our network of science communicators. We publish subscriber content in our quarterly print or digital magazine, as well as in our subscriber section.

For as little as $30 a year you can support our work.

The Ultramarine project – focussing on research and innovation in our marine environments – is supported by Minderoo Foundation.
